Super Exciting News! (and a freebie)

I’m a DigiChick!!

My digital designs are now being carried over at the DigiChick.com.  I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!  Its an amazing store overflowing with digital goodness and an amazing creative team  – and they let me come in and play!  “squeal!”

All Paper Garden Projects designs over there are 20% off…. so feel free to go check it out :)

I thought I’d celebrate by sharing a digi-hybrid project and a little template freebie.

I made these 2 treat holders by simply clipping some digital papers and digital stamps into the template.  Easy-peasy…

You can download the free template here – it is a PSD file for use with Photoshop Elements or regular Photoshop.  If you are strictly a paper scrapper, the measurements to make the treat folders by hand are at the end of this post.

When you unzip  and open the PSD file in Photoshop, it will look like this:

You can see all the layers on the side.  Each layer is a “clipping mask”.  All you need to do is position the digital paper you want to use above the mask, hover your cursor on the line between them and click down when you get the little snowman symbol.  The paper will conform to the clipping mask.

For my projects, I used the wonderful new Digi Chick April collaborative kit called Wishes Hopes and Dreams.

What is a collaborative kit?  All the designers get together and create a kit with the same theme and color scheme.  It is simply amazing – 71 gorgeous papers, 96 digital elements (like frames and flowers and tags), 2 alphas plus templates.  I got to play with it – somebody pinch me!!

You can see some of my papers clicked in here.

A couple things – you can resize the papers to make the pattern smaller if you wish – just make sure it covers the area you want to clip into.  In this template, you need to flip the paper upside down for the back piece if it is a pattern where direction matters.  When you fold the treat holder up – the back will then be right side up.

Here is how the holder looks with the papers clipped in.  You can choose to use the scalloped circle, the scalloped square or no frame just by clicking the little eyeballs on the layers on or off.

Last, you can add the stamp images of your choice to the white windows.  I use the Loving Critters Stamp set (bunny) and the Spring Blooms 2 stamp set (Daffodil) in my samples.

Target the white window layer and drag the stamp image on top.  You can resize it to fit in the white space or you can “clip” it into the window just like with the papers.

Once you are happy with your project, just print it out.  I used the X-Press It Blending Card and was very happy with the result.  The digital papers printed beautifully and I was able to color my stamped images with Copic markers easily.

Note that not all printers print to the very edge.  You might need to tell your printer to “size to fit” in order to get a complete print.

Here is my printed, folded piece.  I also cut out around the image so the jelly beans would peek through.

For the jelly beans, I added a clean piece of card stock to the back of the bag just to keep my beans from slouching  (its hard to get beans to sit up straight!).  The bags are the Wilton Chocolate Lollipop covers available at craft stores.

Assemble the holder (I added a small piece of adhesive to the back to help keep the bean bag in place).  Punch the holes at the top.  Thread a ribbon through to the back  (like shown) and then feed the tails through the opposite hole in the front and trim.

Done!

I hope this simple tutorial is helpful for those of you who are new to Photoshop.  If you like digital images, seriously consider saving your pennies and getting Photoshop Elements.  It it an awesome tool.  Adobe has a free 30 day trial if you would like to check it out.

If you are a “just give me the paper – I don’t want no pixels” crafter, here are the measurements for all the pieces for the treat holder so you can make it by hand.

Stay tuned for more fun digi news….

Official Snow Tasters…

I’m so enjoying the new Eat Cake Graphics stamps.   I decided to use them to decorate a bakery bag full of yummy dried cherry- white chocolate chip – oatmeal cookies (recipe below).  I LOVE oatmeal cookies!

snowbakerybag

I decorated the bakery bag with cardstock and patterned paper strips from the Frosted Winter paper kit.  I punched the edges of the cardstock with the Scalloped Snowflake Border punch.

Before I glued on the upper strip, I added a little tag with a brad.  I also added a little ribbon fluff by gluing ribbon “V’s” behind the tag (the brad and ribbon are included in the paper kit).

The stamps I used are from the Official Snow Tasters Cling set.  This adorable  set even has a doggie playing along with the snow tasting (and it includes the snow too!).  The image is colored with Copics.

So what are you favorite Christmas cookies?  Most of my family are die hard chocolate chip (back of the Nestle bag but no nuts) fans .  But I love a good chewy oatmeal cookie.

I thought I’d share this recipe.    Don’t over bake if you like chewy.  These have a nice crisp edge and a lovely chewy middle.

Basic Recipe:

  • 1 cup butter – softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 cups quick cooking oats

Cream butter, white and brown sugar together.  Beat in eggs and vanilla.

Combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.  Combine dry ingredients with creamed butter mixture.  Stir in the oats.  Chill the dough for at least an hour.

Preheat oven to 375 F.  Grease cookie sheets (or use non-stick).  Roll the dough into walnut size balls.  Place 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet and flatten slightly before baking.

Bake for 8 -10 minutes.

Optional additions:

Raisin Oatmeal cookies – Mix in  2/3 cup (or to taste) after the oatmeal.  If I’m adding raisins, I go a little scant on the white sugar.  I like to use the golden raisins and I “plump” them before I use them (a trick my Grandma taught me).  You put them in a bowl with water to just barley cover and microwave for 20-30 seconds.  Let them sit for a few minutes and then drain the water really well.

Cherry – White Chocolate Oatmeal cookies – add 2/3 cup dried cherries (dried cherries – not candied cherries.  If you can’t find dried cherries try cherry flavored dried cranberries) and about a third of a bag of Nestle white chocolate chips.   Again I skimp a little on the sugar to account for the sweet additions.

So that is one of my favorite cookies (I also love those thumbprint ones with the nuts – made with pecans and homemade strawberry jam.  Yum!).  What is your favorite?

A Vellum Treat Bag for Mrs. Claus

I love this cute Mr. And Mrs Claus  stamp – and I thought Mr. Claus might like to give Mrs. Claus a little bag of kisses.   These mint kisses are really good (had to try one – how can I write an informative post without taste testing?).  And I love the little snowflake-y wrappers.

velbagtemplate

This post contains a tutorial and a template to make the treat bag, and the details for the card.

The Vellum Treat Bag:

The treat bag was made with cover weight vellum.  This is much heavier and stiffer than the vellum you usually find.

You can download a PDF template to make the treat bag here:  Vellum Treat Bag Template.

This template is very similar to the self locking treat bag template, but I moved the attachment point to the back of the bag since the clear vellum might show the adhesive.

velbagtemplatefoldedI would recommend printing the template on paper or cardstock and using it as a guide to cut the vellum.  Any printing on the back of the vellum would also show through it.  Also, printer ink on vellum takes a while to dry and it can be easy to smear it.  I also recommend taking the time to score the fold lines before folding to keep the folds neat.

Fold on the score lines and apply adhesive on the side seam and the bottom flaps (I also put some on the tuck in flap on the bottom).

velbagVellum can pucker and wrinkle when it is exposed to water – so it you are using a water based glue, use as little as necessary.  Non liquid glues (glue runners, doublesided tape and glue dots) work well with vellum ( I love my Adhesive Tape Gun!!).  Nearly all glues will show through the vellum – but the seam in the back helps hide the glue.

For my treat bag, I embossed the top flap using the Cuttlebug Holly Ribbon Embossing Folder.  To hold the bag closed, I set 2 eyelets in the flap and then used them to to measure where 2 holes should be in the base of the bag.  A ribbon threaded through the eyelets and holes in the bag holds the flap closed.  Just pull the ribbon out to get at the kisses.

I also added a couple little red strips punched with a snowflake border punch to the flap and the bottom of the bag.

clausescardclosedThe Mr. and Mrs. Claus Card

I used this week’s  Card Positioning System sketch for my card (I think I’m still in time).

The stamps are from the Mr. and Mrs. Claus Cling stamp set with images by Eat Cake Graphics.  They are stamped with Memento ink and colored with Copics (the red was really challenging me!  Try not to look too close!).

The paper is from the Classic Christmas Cardstock pack.  I really like the Kraft paper with the red.  I’m seeing kraft, red and white in a lot of places lately and really like it.

To coordinate the card with the little bag, I used the Holly Ribbon Cuttlebug folder on the kraft (and inked it with a little distress ink and a duster brush to bring out the detail).

I also punched a scrap of vellum left over from making the bag with the same snowflake border punch and added that as well.  I used the same ribbon too.  (the hardest part about this card was fitting the ribbon through the button holes!)

cardinmaskI thought (for a change) I’d do a little something extra to the inside of the card.  So I stamped the Mr. and Mrs. Clause in red through a hole punched in Eclipse paper (so I could just get their faces).  Then I stamped the sentiment that came with the set (“Merry Everything and Happy Always” – isn’t that sweet?)

So here is my finished inside with Mr. and Mrs. Clause peeking out.

Has anyone else started holiday projects yet?  I can’t believe we are well into November already.

Yikes!!
